Laurita Miller is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, certified for Private Independent Practice, and is certified by the Academy of Social Work Examiners as a Qualified Certified Social Worker. For 25 years, she has provided adult, couple, and family therapy, utilizing various forms of psychotherapy, including Eye Movement, Desensitization, and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Bowenian Family Therapy, Supportive Therapy, and psycho-education. She currently maintains a private practice in two locations: Helena ,and Hoover,Alabama.
Most recently, Laurita was employed as a Psychotherapist with Kaiser Permanente Behavioral Health in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she spent her childhood. Prior to moving to Hawaii from Alabama in 2015, she served Alabama Psychiatric Services as statewide Supervisor of Therapists, where she provided psychotherapy with adults and couples for 15 years. Laurita served as mental health therapist and mental health director of a community mental health agency in Southern Illinois., from 1992-2000, where she also engaged in private practice.
Laurita obtained her Master of Social Work degree, with a concentration in Mental Health and a specialization in Family Therapy, from the acclaimed Washington University, George Warren Brown School of Social Work, in St. Louis Missouri. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Speech from Samford University, in Birmingham, Alabama.
Laurita has provided thousands of hour of psychotherapy. In addition, trained in EMDR in 2005 courses sponsored by the The EMDR Institute, she has used EMDR to treat well over a hundred patients suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Depression, Anxiety and Panic Disorder, Phobias, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, chronic pain, addictive behaviors, and loss and grief, as a result of childhood sexual, physical and emotional abuse, family violence, war, motor vehicle accidents and other physical traumas, criminal sexual and physical assault, suicide of a family member or loved one, job loss and workplace violence, spousal infidelity, peer abuse and bullying, and dental and surgical trauma. She is also well trained in CBT of Depression and Anxiety, having participated in intensive training and Supervision through Kaiser's contract with the U of Penn and the Aaron Beck Institute.
After conducting a thorough initial assessment of an individual, couple, or family, Laurita will assist in establishing a treatment plan for the alleviation of distressful symptoms and disruptive behaviors, and identify therapy goals directed toward personal growth and relationship renewal. Her therapeutic approach is highly personalized and tailored for each individual, couple, or family based on identified needs and goals. With compassion and understanding, she utilizes complimentary methodologies and techniques, helping clients release painful memories, resolve issues constricting personal growth and actualization, build on strengths, and develop new skills.
